INTRODUCTION.

Greetings! This is an independent, dash-only, private, and crossover-friendly roleplay blog for a protagonist oc from Capcom's Monster Hunter Stories 2: Wings of Ruin. My name is Neon, and I am a long-time roleplayer who has been active in the tumblr roleplay community since 2013! I originally established this muse in July of 2021 and have actively been writing her since. Obviously I am in no way affiliated with Capcom or any of its developers, and there may be divergences and unique headcanons from the game's canon where I see fit. If you are curious, feel free to look into my headcanons tag (featured on my pinned post) for further information.While I do enjoy the Monster Hunter franchise, please note that I have only played three mainline games (Rise, World and Wilds) and have played only the Stories games and Wilds to completion. All other information I know about the series has been gathered from research and help from fellow fans and friends in the community.As mentioned before, hi! I'm Neon! I am 25+ years old. Pronouns are she/they. I am aromantic, asexual and autistic. My hobbies outside of roleplaying include drawing, freeform writing, and gaming. I am also the proud pet parent of a conure and a rabbit. I am currently employed, and am simply here to enjoy a hobby. GUIDELINES.

GENERAL.

  • I am private, selective and mutuals only. This means I will only interact with people whom I follow and whom follow me back, and vice versa. I usually give an active blog about forty-eight hours before I choose to unfollow if they do not follow me back; I like to keep my dash clean and mutual-exclusive!

  • Please respect this guideline. Do not take it personally if I choose not to follow you—but please don't pressure me to interact if we are not mutuals. It causes unnecessary anxiety for me, and I am simply here to vibe.

  • Non-mutuals are permitted to send headcanon-related questions. I appreciate anyone who is interested in learning more about Mari and helping me develop her! Asks from non-mutuals are permitted so long as they are not turned into a roleplay. Likewise, I am fine with non-mutuals and personals reblogging graphics and other stuff not directly related to my blog. Please refrain from reblogging my threads if you are not involved, as well as status and out of character posts!

  • This blog is on low activity for the foreseeable future. While I will still pop up on the dash to answer asks and write replies from time to time, most of my attention has shifted to new muses. I don't intend on moving away from Mari completely yet, but just know that activity here will be spotty!

  • I am generally a very active blog, and I tend to look for blogs who are equally active! This is not to say that I will only follow active blogs. If I've known you for a while, or I enjoy your content, or we have had at least one thread going, I won't break mutuals with you regardless. This is moreso here to let my partners know that when I am active on dash, I post a lot.

  • There are always exceptions to this note. I curate my space regularly and trim my dash of blogs that have not been active or interacted with me in several months. Likewise, I am more likely to softblock active mutuals who have not interacted with me after a period of several weeks. Before I do this, I typically will make a post to notify mutuals so that they may like if they are still interested in staying mutuals.

  • Lastly, if I softblock you, do not take it personally, and know that ninety-nine percent of the time, it isn't personal! You are free to follow me for my content if you so desire, just know that I may or may not follow you back!

  • Basic Roleplay Etiquette is expected. Obviously no major godmodding or metagaming without my consent. I allow minor godmodding and sometimes practice it myself for the sake of advancing a post, but otherwise I make a point to practice good roleplay etiquette and I expect my partners do the same.

  • Please do not consistently badger me for replies. I allow a friendly reminder every two weeks. Otherwise, please be patient with me! My responses can take anywhere from a few hours to a few weeks depending on my muse for a specific thread.


UN/FOLLOWING.

  • I'm incredibly choosy with whom I follow! I'm not a follow-for-follow blog and if I choose to follow first, that means that yes, I would like to interact with you.

  • I will generally not follow if: You do not regularly cut your posts, do not have essential information (Your pen-name, rules page, and muse information + verses) and over-format your posts to an unreadable degree. While I was a lot more lax about my followers in the past, these days I typically only follow first if I genuinely can see us interacting and have interest in doing so.

  • Obviously, the practice of some less than savory behaviors may also lead to me to unfollowing a mutual. For me an absolute no-no is vagueblogging. If you have issues with a particular person, either communicate that issue with them properly or take it to a private space.

  • Other reasons I may not follow: Simply not knowing or being comfortable writing with the content material of your blog, little to no writing examples of your blog (obviously if I know you well, and you are starting up a new blog after being a long time partner of mine, I am keen to make exceptions.)

  • If for whatever reason you choose to unfollow me, Please softblock me! This spares me from having to comb through my following list to break mutuals completely, as well as saves both partners from the awkwardness of me accidentally sending in a prompt to a non-mutual. Usually I do not mind at all when a partner breaks mutuals with me, however if we are particularly close and have known / interacted for some time, I may feel prompted to reach out.

  • Repeated breaching of my guidelines will result in a softblock. This namely goes for non-mutuals attempting to interact or like my starter calls. I have boundaries that I like to keep and I have a right to maintain them. Please respect if I am not interested in interacting with you. Repeated attempts to interact with me if we are not mutuals will result in a softblock and eventually a hardblock of it continues.

  • Triggers of mine include: Graphic depictions of Hell (Think of Dante's Inferno and Hieronymus Bosch,) and Real-life Apocalypse Predictions. I have some mild religious trauma. I ask that any particularly graphic things in general be tagged properly, but the two listed above are particularly uncomfortable for me!

  • I currently DO NOT post starter calls. In recent months I've struggled with coming up with decent starters for new partners, and that instead I have more success doing some pre-plotting and reaching out to partners I want to interact with. If you are interested in writing with me, you can access my permanent starter call or otherwise like my plotting calls, which gives me permission to reach out to you.

  • Fandoms / RPCs I am generally wary of: Pokemon. I will not necessarily completely avoid interacting with these fandoms, but rather I typically am not one to follow first due to previous bad experiences or negative associations. If you write a muse from one of these fandoms, and I follow first, it's likely because I know you and am comfortable with you. Likewise, if I follow back after a follow first, then you're gucci. <3

  • Fandoms / RPCs I refuse to interact with: Danganrompa, Fire Emblem, Disney* These are fandoms that I have either had bad experiences with or have witnessed particularly bad experiences with and have made me lose interest in the subject matter altogether. If you are a multimuse that features muses from these fandoms, I may not follow first. I do not mind following multimuses with muses from these fandoms, but I typically will not interact with them.

  • *About my Disney DNI: I am willing to still engage + interact with current mutuals who have a Disney muse single-blog / or have a mutlimuse with Disney muses on it. However, I will not follow back single-muses from this fandom unless I know you from this point forwards.


CONTENT.

  • Content on this blog is rated PG-13. There might be exploration of darker topics such as trauma, violence, etc. Triggering subjects will be properly tagged, and do not be afraid to reach out to me if you want a certain subject tagged in some way.

  • This blog is smut-free. My muse is a minor, and regardless smut has never been my cup of tea. Likewise I'm generally apprehensive towards romance—I typically will only write ships with partners whom I share a good camaraderie with and whom I trust. Obviously, any romantic content will be restricted to puppy love. Otherwise, all relationships my muse has will be platonic.

  • This blog is not spoiler free! Monster Hunter Stories 2: Wings of Ruin dropped in 2021. If for some reason you haven't played the game prior to following and still want to go into it blind, then I suggest you complete it before following my content. Most of my interactions are post-game, meaning that Mari and friends have already gone through the game's events.

  • Content on this blog is mostly canon-adjacent. Of course, I have several small divergences from the game's canon. Most notably, Mari has been a rider for three years prior to the events of MHS2 and is seventeen by the time that the game kicks off. This is mainly so that her first two monsties, Chama and Chunma, are already grown and able to be ridden.


  • Other fandoms (but not all!) that I am familiar with include: Professor Layton, Nintendo, Digimon, Trigun, Dreamworks, Studio Ghibli, Nickelodeon, Cartoon Network.

  • Please don't be afraid to reach out if you have a concern! Generally speaking I do not bite, and I value communication. I understand and respect others' decisions to cut ties with me if they so choose, but if we are particularly close, then I expect issues to be communicated with me before ultimately cutting ties.

MARI OF MAHANA

CHARACTER BRIEF: Hailing from the sleepy island village of Mahana, Mari already had big shoes to fill as the grandchild of the famous rider, Red. When a new and mysterious force sends monsters rampaging and the island guardian rathalos away from his lair, Mari becomes swept up in a massive journey to find the cause while raising the infamously known “Razewing Rathalos” from an egg. This great quest would put her bonds with her companions to the test, and forever engrave their names as legends.

—PERSONALITY.

Abrasive, athletic and tough, Mari beholds a strong enthusiasm and determinedness for the things that she tackles, even against her logic and better judgement. She’s the hands-on kind of girl, the type who likes to try things for herself and who runs blindly into situations and sort them out that way. She’s a bit brash on her exterior — a jock. But don’t let that fool you; Mari is still loyal, sensitive and caring to her friends and monsties. Despite her loud and extroverted nature, she’s surprisingly talented with creatures and handles them with gentle care and kindness.Unfortunately, Mari’s hands on, determined nature often causes her to be reckless and impulsive on decisions. She will willingly throw herself into danger, sometimes against the will of others, though in delicate situations she might feel poised to strategize first. Mari does not typically hide her feelings towards others,but deep down, she’ll hide her feelings and thoughts about herself. Mari is sometimes self-sabotaging as the result of self-doubt, implanted in her for standing in the shadow of her grandfather and being tasked with a responsibility that many do not trust her to carry rightly, including herself. She has a weird way of trying to cope; by throwing herself into her work or her fears in hopes of proving herself wrong, for better or for worse.Toward her enemies, Mari is known to hold strong grudges. She can be particularly violent, bitter and cold, and loves to throw punches just as much as she throws insults. She is incredibly protective of her companions and unwaveringly fierce. Mari has not once backed down from a fight out of terror.Other quirks include a general slight lack of personal space (typical of Mahanians, who sometimes greet each other by holding each others’ faces.) Her rough playfulness that includes light punches, an enjoyment of all things cute (provided they aren’t annoying,) and her trademark cool smirk.


—ABILITIES & SKILLS.

  • MONSTER RIDING AND HANDLING: An almost natural talent for the people of her region, Mari has proven to be a talented monster rider and handler. She treats her companions as family and ensures they are in good care, and over the course of her journey, both her kinship and her ability to understand their emotions (especially with her rathalos,) only strengthens. Mari has inherited her grandfather’s talent and it shows.

  • MONSTER TELEPATHY: It is said that Mari’s grandfather, Red, possessed the ability to hear the voices of monsters. This is a talent that Mari did not inherit, but rather, began to develop over the course of her journey as a rider, especially with the Razewing Rathalos. While she cannot hear ‘voices’ the way that Red supposedly could, she is very in tune with their emotions and grasps a decent understanding of the meanings behind them.

  • BASIC SURVIVAL SKILLS: Mari possesses basic survival skills, the things needed for long nights spent outside of settlements, situations for when rations are low and when rest needs to be taken. This includes making campfires, hunting, cooking, boiling water, and making basic tools and weapons. Although, having her monsties around certainly makes these things easier.

  • WEAPON HANDLING: Mari is comfortable brandishing large weapons to defend herself and others from large monsters. She is particularly skilled with a hammer and favors a greatsword, but will use a bow and arrow if necessary. She’s not very good with a gunlance or a horn.

  • ENHANCED STRENGTH AND DURABILITY: A trait shared by all riders and hunters of her race, Mari is stronger and more durable than the average human. She’s nowhere near befitting of ‘superhuman,’ but as a result of being descended from ancient dragonslayers, she is physically more capable than a regular human being. Mari can take a lot more hits and survive more intense conditions as a result of this.

  • ATHLETICISM: Mari is physically fit and well-built. She might not be very flexible, but her fitness has allowed her to do some pretty crazy stunts, such as leaping off of a tower jump on a departing airship (with a little help from Navirou.) She can throw a pretty good punch and knows basic martial fighting. Kyle has a mark on his nose to prove it.

  • OTHER TALENTS: Has a good singing voice, picked up some basic tracking skills from Reverto, likes to make little accessories. Cannot draw or dance to save her life.


HISTORY.

Her birth signified a new chapter in the legacy of the legendary monster rider, Red. Mari was born in Red’s childhood village of Mahana, on Hakolo Island. Though her parents loved her dearly, they would not live long enough to see her grow, as they both died tragically when Mari was too young to remember. Hence, she was raised by her grandfather for her first few years of life. Then, that too changed. Mari’s memory is hazy, but she recalls her grandfather departing on his beloved Rathalos when she was only four years old. Weeks later, word carried that Red had passed. From then on, Mari was taken in by Chief Gara and raised by him and the rest of her village.Mari never got to know how her grandfather died, but she heard tales of his achievements for all of her childhood. Like most other Mahana children, she was swept into the tradition of monster riding and began her training at a young age. It was a duty that she aspired to take up, after her beloved grandfather who she continued to look up to and who she dearly missed.Gradually, the wounds from a lack of closure over Red’s death healed. At the age of fourteen, Mari took the next step in her training and found a Pukei-Pukei egg that she would hatch as a Rite of Passage for Mahana monster riders. This Pukei-Pukei, she named Chama, and they spent the next three years together strengthening their bond while Mari continued her training. It was also during those first three years that Mari eventually hatched her second monstie egg, another Pukei-Pukei called Chunma.Mari became a fully-fledged rookie rider at seventeen, and as a result, began proper fieldwork with her mentor, long-time friend Kayna. It was at this time, however, that strange events began to occur; on the night of the annual Rathalos Festival, the sky and the sea turned red, and all of the island’s Rathalos, including the guardian that once belonged to Mari’s grandfather, fled. Tension began to rise between local riders and visiting hunters from the mainland, who reportedly entered the Island Guardian's sacred lair without permission.Mari began fieldwork training the next day, at the behest of Chief Gara. The following days would be filled with a series of strange events, like an odd felyne named Navirou, violent monsters, and a raging Anjanath with glowing eyes. As the strange occurrences grew, Mari soon encountered a young wyverian girl who bestowed upon her Red’s kinship stone, and a blood red Rathalos egg.Believing that the egg would be safe in her hands, Mari set out with Navirou and the wyverian, called Ena. The trio would begin a quest that would change their lives forever…

RATHA "RED"

Mari’s closest and most loyal companion, Ratha or “Red” as referred to by his master, is the legendary rathalos that was born in infamy. Originally hatched wingless, this Rathalos was given his name after Mari’s grandfather. The flightless hatchling was believed to be the legendary “Razwing Ratha,” a creature said to bring ruin to the world. As a result, Red spent the first year of his life being pursued by hunters and scriveners alike. Despite this, his growing bond with Mari showed when the then adolescent rathalos sprouted his wings in order to save her from a massive fall.Ratha has incredible power, which, in the right hands, can be used to destroy powerful villains and enemies. It’s also been shown to be very destructive if left out of control. Despite this, Ratha himself is a gentle soul; he’s the kind who will warm up to anyone, loves to take long naps and can sometimes be a bit absentminded. With the right amount of patience, he can learn to forgive his enemies rapidly, provided they’ve set themselves on the right path. Ratha is incredibly loyal and affectionate to Mari, and regards her as his mother. In the same vein, Mari sees Ratha like a friend and like a son.

Streak is an adult Tobi-Kadachi who originally was lended to Mari during her stay in Kuan Village as an all-terrain vehicle. The rider, who absolutely loathed the snow, had a horrible time getting around in the new environment prior. Though his stay was supposed to be temporary, Streak and Mari quickly took to one another, and ultimately Avinia decided to let her keep him. Streak proved to be a valuable asset after Ratha was kidnapped, as his great speed and initiative helped Mari and Reverto cross the deserts of Lamure to find the beloved Rathalos.Streak is notably intelligent, having quickly picked up commands from his rider and shown to be responsive to her emotions. He is incredibly loyal and quick to act. He is also the type who will throw himself in the thick of danger in order to aid his companions.


CHAMA & CHUNMA

  • notable abilities: poisonous vapors from saliva and tail gland. long, prehensile tongues. color shifting based on mood, flight.

Before Red and Streak, there were Chama and Chunma. These two pukei-pukei were Mari’s first monsties. Chama, the older of the two, was hatched as Mari’s first when she was only fourteen years old. During a period of three years, Mari spent the next part of her training strengthening her bond with Chama, all while learning how to handle weaponry and defend herself from monsters. When Chama was about a year old, Mari hatched her second egg, Chunma.Of the two, Chama is the more mischievous and playful while Chunma is more serious and aloof. These two wyverns will sometimes get into petty squabbling over each other's antics, but more often than not, they’ve learned to work in tandem with one another and have proven to be powerful members of Mari’s team. Mari affectionately calls them “The Boys,” and they were key role models for Ratha during his early weeks.

NAVIROU


This strange felyne with the ability to sense the potential of monstie eggs and radiate electricity started out as a pest to Mari. Now, he's one of Mari's closest companions. Navirou sports a blue scarf around his neck as a symbol of their friendship.



ENA


A young wyverian girl who was once friends with Mari's grandfather. She is the one responsible for gifting Mari his kinship stone as well as Ratha's egg. She has become one of Mari's closest confidants, having developed a sibling-like relationship with her.



KYLE


A young hunter boy who was once one of Mari's greatest enemies. After recognizing the bond between Mari and her monsties, Kyle had a change of heart and decided to aid her in her quest to unravel the truth behind the legend of Razewing Ratha.



TSUKINO


Kyle's palico and most trusted partner, Wherever Kyle goes, she goes. Her relationship with Mari is amiable but relatively distant, though a bet she made with the young rider resulted in Mari ending up with several pet Downy Crakes.

RED


Famous rathalos rider and former leader of Mahana, Red is Mari's grandfather. After the death of her parents, Mari was raised by him until the tender age of four, when he left on an important mission, and died before he could return. Mari struggles to live up to his name, but thinks of him fondly, earning her rathalos his namesake.



CHIEF GARA


Chieftain of Mahana, and an old companion of Red's, this wyverian man chose to adopt Mari and raise her as his own in the wake of Red's death. Alongside the rest of the community, he has looked after Mari since she was small.



KAYNA


Experienced Rider and captain of Mahana's riders, Kayna has been close companions with Mari for as long as Mari can remember. Kayna is Mari's surrogate older sister, having chosen to help look after her in the wake of Red's death.

CHAMPION OF MAHANA.


POST GAME. The defeat of the apocalyptic beast Oltura marks a new age for riders and monsters alike, thanks to the heroic efforts of Mari and her legendary Rathalos. Their destinies fulfilled, they are crowned the new Champions of Mahana. Mari’s adventures are not over just yet though, and life is busy on Hakolo Island in the wake of the chaos caused by the Wings of Ruin.

PRE-GAME. Mari is a young rider-in-training, following in the footsteps of her famous grandfather while growing up in the sleepy seaside village of Mahana. As she grows as a novice rider, expectations of her future are placed on her shoulders by her fellow villagers. Mari certainly has big shoes to fill.


UNWINDING THE LEGEND; THE JOURNEY.


MID-GAME. What once began as her first day as a fully fledged rider, ends up with her becoming swept in a great mission to save the world. Joined by a strange feline named Navirou and a kind wyverian called Ena, Mari becomes burdened with the responsibility of raising the infamous “Razewing Ratha” from an egg while investigating a strange anomaly that has monsters rampaging all across the world. As she unwinds the legend of the young Rathalos, so too does Mari meet new friends and enemies along the way.

WILD CITY SLICKER.


MODERN. From Kauai, Hawaii, United States, Mari is a small-town girl preparing for a life of travel and adventure ahead. Though she lives a quaint life and has big dreams studying wildlife, she struggles with her academic studies in a relatively normal world.


DIGITAL MONSTER CHAMPION.


DIGIMON. A branch off of Mari's Modern AU. Currently studying abroad in Japan, Mari inexplicably becomes swept up into being partners with a strange creature while picking up what she thought was a fun little hobby. Now with her companion "Guilmon," Mari must find a way to solve a new anomaly.


A WANDERING SEABIRD.


WARRIOR CATS. Crashing Wave is the future leader of the Tribe of Great Sky and Sea. Feeling pressure and fearing for her future, the young cat decides to venture from her seaside territory to the woods, where she would soon encounter clans of old.


HONOR SOUGHT ON WINGS.


WINGS OF FIRE. The end of the War of Sandwing Succession grants Seahawk, an orphaned seawing with skywing traits, the freedom to leave her home on the outskirts of the Rainforest Kingdom. Seeking to make a name for herself, she lives in the shadows of her deceased parents, both fabled traitors to their respective queens.
